Evening at Ganges – Vancouver Travel Photographer

To gaze at the river made of time and water
And recall that time itself is another river,
To know we cease to be, just like the river,
And that our faces pass away, just like the water.

Pyramids at Sunrise – Vancouver Travel Photographer

April was a slow month on my blog and I was wondering what should I post as a first entry after such a long hiatus.

Sonamarg | Vancouver Destination Photographer

Surrounded by tall mountains and hanging glaciers, Sonamarg Valley is one of the many gems in the Kashmir region of Himalayas. The nomadic tribes that live there during the summer with their herds were getting ready to leave soon because 4 meters of snowfall is not an unusual thing here during the winter. We were fortunate enough to spend an afternoon with these beautiful people and share a wonderful lunch and a cup of tea under the sunny sky.

Faces of Kashmir | Destination Photography

Last travel post showed the images of the Dal Lake in Kashmir. Here are some of the portraits of people who live in Srinagar and Kashmir valley. It’s one of the most beautiful places I have ever traveled too but it has been devastated by years of religious and political conflicts. People of Kashmir mirror the place they live in. Their faces, marked with deep pores of hard life show their inner beauty just like their country, marked with conflict and intolerance still awes its visitors.

Dal Lake in Kashmir

I managed to find some time to dig into the hard drives and find some of my travel photos. There are thousands of photographs from dozens of countries I have traveled to in the last 10 years. I didn’t know where to start so I chose the week, exactly one year ago when we landed in Kashmir to begin our 9 month journey through the Indian subcontinent.

Nestled underneath the Himalayas is Srinagar, the capital of the Jammu and Kashmir province. In the heart of the city is the beautiful Dal Lake. The lake is an oasis of peace and tranquility in a region poisoned by religious and political conflict (we witnessed a car bomb explosion during our stay). It is a community of its own. There are floating houseboats, floating gardens, floating mosques and schools, even a floating market. People use small wooden boats, shikaras, to get around. As you’re sitting on the terrace of your houseboat, merchants will float by to sell their produce, flowers or souvenirs. Kingfishers dive into the lake for their dinner and out there, a few kilometers past the North shore of the lake, is the towering wall, thousands of meters high – the Himalayas.

Busy week for this Vancouver photographer

It has been hectic here in the DarkoRoom ever since my arrival to Vancouver last month but I guess being busy is good. There are a few new posts for the blog in the making but since I didn’t have time to complete either one of them  here is a little peek at what’s been  happening these last few days.

I did my first maternity shoot with a beautiful couple Cassandra and Chris, took a portrait of Dr. Deborah Money for the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research, started a gallery of Fine Art prints from my travel photography (there is only one photo in there for now but many more to come) and photographed the very talented musician Jenny Galt. On top of that, together with my creative partner Chico Sousa, I am working on developing a small video production company and we are in the process of making a music video for Jenny. And finally, “Wash Away In India”, the video in this post is made from the footage I shot during my trip to India, it has been edited by Chico and the beautiful song is by Audra Mae.
